Its been a long time coming (for me at least), but the first episode of I'm directing for Chart Attack and Steam Whistle is finally out. The series is called Noisemakers, and it features exclusive interviews and sessions from some great Canadian and international artists.

This first episode features new Arts & Crafts signees Eight and a Half, a band made up of members of The Stills and Broken Social Scene. You can view and read more on the Noisemakers home page, or watch the first clip below.

The Darcys: Josie

In December, I was asked to shoot a new music video for The Darcys, for a single off of their new record Aja . I acted as DP on the video, with help from Joel Barnes, and it was directed by their manager Aaron Miller. The Wicks

Here's another film I shot in Victoria a couple weeks ago, this time featuring The Wicks. I was out there filming an EPK feature for Snoqualmie (aka Blake Enemark), and he informed me that he also played bass in this band, so we figured we'd make use of the time there to do a video with them...

So here's a fun, sloppy session live from their living room jam space, which turned out to be pretty rockin'.

The Coppertone

For the last 10 days, I've been out on tour across Canada with The Coppertone, filming for a music video along the way. While we were on the ferry to Victoria yesterday, we felt inspired, and decided to film a nice little acoustic session. Amanda chose to try out a new song, called Quicksand, which she's been playing on tour. Its a bit of a departure from the rest of The Coppertone's songs, but it really lends itself to a simple arrangement, and soft playing like this. In August, we shot 10 (yes... 10) videos for The Darcys to put up the day of their record release, which just so happens to be today. Coeur De Pirate

On sunday morning I met Beatrice Martin, aka Coeur de Pirate at The Great Hall to film a session. She played us 2 new songs, including "Place de la République" and here single "Adieu". The space really lent itself to these songs, with its beautiful and bright look, an old baby grand piano, and its cavernous room reverb. After driving straight into Toronto from the US yesterday, I met James Vincent Mcmorrow in Kensington market in the early evening. Taking it as a perfect opportunity to get out of the van (finally), we found a nice little spot in the market to film one of his more mellow songs, "Hear The Noise That Moves So Soft and Low". Enjoy

Last week i had a 3-in-1 session with some great artists that were all brought together by Slapback Media, a great little PR group in Toronto. We filmed The Elwins, Tia Brazda, and this band, Modernboys Moderngirls. The band is fronted by my new friend Akira, the man who made these sessions all happen, so I figured I'd get this one out first. I really love the vibe in this Kensington Market garage, and especially love the hand-made backdrop that the band recently commissioned a friend to craft. Enjoy!

Arkells in Studio

Over the winter, I made a few trips to Bath, Ontario to spend some time in the studio with the Arkells. They were recording their new album Michigan Left in a giant house that had been converted into a studio by the Tragically Hip and Blue Rodeo. The space was absolutely beautiful, and had a really laid-back vibe, which made documenting the recording process so much better.

The other day, they finally announced the record, and we released the first of a few in-studio teaser clips that I'm working on to have leading up to the record release. Enjoy this clip featuring a new song called 'On Paper'.

Sorry for the lack of updates recently guys. Wood & Wires is going through some changes, and we're moving forward with some bigger projects. We're not ignoring the Wood & Wires Video Series however, and we'll still be posting new sessions here, but I thought I'd clear the air a little. We've got some exciting projects that you'll be able to see soon, including some in-studio pieces with some really great bands, and a live concert film from another cool local artist.

Otherwise, there will be some new Wood & Wires sessions out soon featuring Modern Boys Modern Girls, The Elwins, Donna Grantis, The Fires Of and some really exciting artists that i'll be able to announce soon!

Mother Mother

Its been a while since we shot this one... The files disappeared for a while, but luckily I managed to find them. In May we met up with Rebekah Higgs at the Steam Whistle brewery in downtown toronto, to film a few songs in the main hall, and this is what we ended up with. Thanks to Matt Weed and everyone at Steam Whistle for making it happen, and also for the fresh-off-the-line mid-day beers. They are always super hospitable, and make a great brew!

The first of those bands, was London's Bombay Bicycle Club, which i was really excited for, both because they're an amazing band, and because i have a special place in my heart for London. On a cold March night, Aidan Knight braved the cold with me to film a few songs and a brief interview. We walked around that Queen's University campus to find a few nice spots. In the first location Aidan played "Land's End". The room's reverb was beautiful and suited the song very well. Afterwards we found a nice spot by the library where, although freezing cold, he played a new untitled song. I've been trying out some new lenses and i think they look pretty good, what do you think?

In the middle of a snowstorm, we made the trek to Toronto, and met The Young Novelists at a beautiful mansion on the campus of a private high school. The band delivers a classic folk sound, but make it so rich and full with guitars, violin, mandolin, organ, and several vocals which create wonderful harmonies.

Sometimes in life, there are moments that make you realize you should try something new. Getting electrocuted can be one of those moments. My friend Kirk, aka Giant Hand, is currently touring across Canada with another Ottawa native, Winchester Warm. The two work together on songs, which is really nice to see with bands on tour. After getting electrocuted inside when we tried to film a song in there, we moved outside and filmed a nice little acoustic song on the fire escape on the house in my backyard. Winchester Warm lent a little help on percussion too. Enjoy

Bedouin Soundclash were kind enough to take some time out of a busy day on tour, in Kingston, where the band formed. They met me at The Kingston Guitar shop, one of the sweetest music stores i've been to, and played a couple tunes for us. It was an interesting setup, with acoustic guitar, drums, and an electric bass, but the sound really came together nicely.

Michael Rault

Michael Rault is truly one of the coolest musicians i've ever been able to work with. He revives 50's/60's blues and rock & roll so effortlessly, and so naturally, that its just not fair. You put on his record and you're jumped back in time, where music was just these simple, bare bones, rockin' love songs.
Michael met me in Kingston, along with Bedouin Soundclash, for whom he was opening on a Canada-wide tour. He played a few tunes for us in my favourite guitar shop eve, The Kingston Guitar Shop. Plugging into an old amp, his sound came through just as gritty and warm as it should have, and made this session just perfect (along with some helpful hand-claps by Jay and the rest of Bedouin and crew).

Daniel Romano

Dan Romano is one of the most multi-faceted musicians i know. The man used to play in a punk band, which turned into an indie rock band, which became a folk rock band, which, became a country-esque indie band. Dan constantly re-invents himself. His solo projects have always been folk and country inspired, and now with his most recent solo record, he has taken the country/folk style all the way.
When i met up with Dan and his brother Ian in Kingston, I was asked if i was ok with filming an 8 minute song. Knowing Dan, it didn't surprise me, and i was up for it all the same, so we went for it, and this is the result.

Harbour Coats

Little do many know, Harbour Coats is the solo side-project of Constantines guitarist/lead singer Bry Webb. I met up with Bryan at Sydenham United Church in Kingston, before his date opening for Dan Mangan. We filmed a song in the church, as well as another outside.Minus an audio recorder mishap, this is one of those rare occasions where everything lined up perfectly. We weren't rushed, and Bry was genuinely as interested and gracious to be working on this as I was. I feel like this is a special and pretty serene video, and I really hope you enjoy it as much as i do.

Last week i met up with STARS to film a session before their show at the Sydenham St. Church in Kingston. As all the eager fans waiting outside caught on to what we were doing, a small crowd formed and Stars played a beautiful song from their new album The Five Ghosts for everyone. Steve Lambke of the epic Constantines, recently assembled a great band for his side project, Baby Eagle. Including Shotgun Jimmie, and Ian Kehoe of Attack in Black, Lambke took Baby Eagle on the road to promote his new record Dog Weather (which has to be one of my favourite records of the year).
I caught up with Baby Eagle when they stopped at The Artel in Kington, and filmed a special little live session.

In the summer, Billy Talent did a surprise show at the Horseshoe Tavern in downtown Toronto. This small 350-cap show was a huge contrast from their last Toronto show the month before, infront of 16,000 people at the Air Canada Center. So this summer i co-directed a documentary with James Featherstone from www.whatweseeiswhatyouget.com , which chronicled a day on the Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Against Me, and Cancer Bats spring tour.

Its airing this sunday August 29th on Aux TV (ch 107 on Rogers, 138 on Shaw), at 8:00pm. It's really great and I'm so excited to have something I directed air on national television. If you own a TV set and have nothing better to do on sunday, check it out!

After much trouble with scheduling, a few week ago NeGar met me at Guildwood park to shoot a little video. I had never been there before, and was totally blown away. Its a giant park on the bluffs overlooking the lake, with tons of old sculptures and architecture. It served as the perfect backdrop to this lovely little video featuring NeGar, who's EP should be out soon. Look out for it!. Hope you enjoy.

BILLY TALENT SECRET SHOW

A couple weeks ago i got a call from Aaron, inviting myself and James to film a secret show that Billy Talent were planning before their trip to Europe. Then, this past tuesday, Billy Talent announced a surprise show at the Horseshoe Tavern in toronto. Now this is a band that just filled almost 19,000 seats at the Air Canada Center, and they now were playing a show at the tiny Horseshoe Tavern. Do the math (Billy Talent + Horseshoe Tavern= Fucking Mayhem).
Here's a little teaser i just put together for the live video we are going to put out. Keep in mind this is just the first shot of the live show, its just a little taste- the rest is really insane.

A couple months ago i shot a video with Daniel, Fred & Julie when they visited Kingston. To my surprise, traveling with them was Steve Lambke, guitarist of the epic ontario band, The Constantines. Many do not know that Steve has a side project called Baby Eagle, and he was opening for Daniel, Fred and Julie on their tour. With what little spare time we had, Steve was nice enough to play a quick acoustic tune, accompanied by Daniel Romano. Here it is.

Last week i had the chance to meet up with Holly Miranda before her show in Toronto at the El Mocambo. The shoot was very last minute and caused some confusion, however in the end it turned out beautifully. Holly seemed to be such a kind and genuine person, and i think that really comes through in these videos.
When we met, we took a walk up to U of T campus, and found this amazing old ivy-covered building on spadina. Holly first played an acoustic rendition of her song "Waves", and then treated me to a very special cover of "Hundreds of Sparrows" by Sparklehorse. Hope you enjoy!

Here is a live film with Daniel, Fred and Julie that I shot a couple weeks ago in Kingston. The group is comprised of Daniel Romano from Attack in Black, Julie Doiron of Eric's Trip, Shotgun & Jaybird, and of solo fame, and Fred Squire of Shotgun & Jaybird. They play really amazing folk standards with beautiful harmonies.
